How the Bugatti Tourbillon Reflects Luxury Watchmaking

French supercar maker Bugatti has unveiled the successor to the Chiron, ushering in a new era of hybridization. Surprisingly, the car’s name and inspiration comes directly from one of luxury watchmaking’s most powerful yet timelessly elegant complications, the tourbillon – our home turf. From the skeletonized, air-exposed 1775-horsepower V16 to the mechanical speedometer, we’re breaking down how Bugatti uses the tourbillon and the spirit of luxury watchmaking as inspiration for its next supercar.

Sadly, I’ve witnessed many automotive journalists misinterpret the tourbillon and its true function when covering supercars – an issue that, as watch enthusiasts, we should step in and shed some light on. So, let’s start by understanding the tourbillon.

Why did Bugatti name it ‘tourbillon’?

The tourbillon or ‘tour-bee-yon’ means ‘whirlwind’ in French and refers to an object or, in this case, a mechanical watch complication that rotates in motion. This dancing wonder of a mechanical complication was invented in 1795 by Breguet founder Abraham-Louis Breguet and patented in 1801. By definition, a tourbillon is a device that constantly rotates the balance wheel, hairspring, and escapement while the movement is running. Its sole purpose, in terms of productivity, is to counteract the effects of the earth's gravity on the isochronism of the balance wheel and hairspring. With this invention, Lord Breguet worked to eliminate the potential errors caused by leaving a watch in one position for too long. He theorized that if the movement were to be constantly moving in a certain way, these position errors could be eliminated.

The tourbillon is mechanically elegant and looks fascinating, but its usefulness as a complication has been questioned for centuries, as it is only a correction for a "potential" problem. Despite this, today the tourbillon is still considered a totem of mechanical poetry, and every watchmaker has his own approach.

Great! Now that we've cleared that up, let's discuss why Bugatti's new flagship hybrid is named after the tourbillon. In my opinion, a tourbillon defies the effects of gravity – an apt description for a supercar that defies the forces of nature, but Bugatti had other ideas. In a press release, they mentioned, “The design concept is focused on timelessness. Inspired by the world of horology, where timepieces from over 100 years ago can still be worn and used today, our design and engineering teams worked hard to encapsulate this authentic analog experience within the cabin of the tourbillon.”

Fully mechanized dial displays speed
The heart of the tourbillon takes horological philosophy to the extreme – the instrument panel is made up of more than 600 ultra-light parts, designed and manufactured by the Swiss watchmaker. Watchmaking is keen on using precious jewels and materials, and the Bugatti Tourbillon follows suit – its central instrument panel is made of titanium, sapphire and ruby, and features a skeletonized design. The massive 550 km/h speedometer and gear indicator have a center-axis pointer, mimicking the look of a dial with two hands. Its adjacent fuel, temperature and battery panels also create the look of sporty subdials. Much like the way a horological tourbillon rotates on an axis, the steering wheel of the Bugatti Tourbillon is designed to rotate around the dashboard using a "fixed hub steering wheel".

Sporty chronograph-style center console
Speaking of the retro-futuristic dashboard, Bugatti said: "The tourbillon has a completely analog instrument panel, carefully crafted by Swiss watchmakers and polished with the same care as the world's greatest timepieces. Just like these heirlooms that become heirlooms passed down from generation to generation, the tourbillon is designed to be a timeless car." The tourbillon is cast from aluminum and crystal glass, the latter inheriting the level of research and development of innovative new case materials - 13 stages of pressurization and clarification to create a strong, clear and safe structure. Aluminum parts are anodized and milled from a single block of metal, while knurled aluminum switches create a hollow contrast. Crystal provides clarity, aluminum exudes skeletal elegance, and buttons and knobs seem inspired by the design of sporty chronograph pushers and stainless steel bezels of luxury watches.

Openworked engine bay
The powerful V16 is simple, ultralight and durable, taking "natural aspiration" to the extreme while following key watchmaking cues. It removes the glass engine window, exposing the V16 to the elements, just like the mechanical elegance of a watch tourbillon. At the same time, it also shows its engineering prowess, with titanium and carbon fiber manufacturing not only to enhance performance but also to show its craftsmanship.

Jacob & Co. Bugatti Tourbillon
Jacob & Co. and Bugatti are twin brothers who have created an absolute luxury icon. When Bugatti launched the tourbillon, I had a tingling feeling that Jacob & Co. dared not turn down the opportunity to show another collaborative mechanical wonder.

The Bugatti Tourbillon celebrates a groundbreaking new mechanical instrument panel and a powerful V16 engine, and Jacob & Co. miniaturized them and encased them in a sleek black PVD titanium case. With a jumping hour and minute dial that mimics its tachymeter and a "Bugatti" badge at six o'clock, the Jacob & Co. eponymous watch embodies the mechanical refinement, powerful body and use of ultra-light materials of a supercar. Next to it is the 30-second flying tourbillon (their fastest tourbillon ever) and the power reserve indicator, which has been designed as a fuel indicator. To the south, just like the new Bugatti V16, the engine block automation system has its own exhaust manifold. This sequence lasts 20 seconds. Inside, the Jacob & Co. JCAM55 is manually wound, contains 557 parts and offers a power reserve of 48 hours. The Jacob & Co Bugatti Tourbillon watch is inspired by a supercar inspired by luxury watchmaking - a cross-cultural phenomenon indeed!
